I have the Sonlight Maps module in my current v8 E-Sword and would like to move it to v9. I tried both converters with no luck. (One does not even offer to convert .map modules. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Sonlight Maps Conversion

rdagijones,
Sonlight Maps are not a legally distributable resource, as they are held under copywrite. They were removed from e-Sword.net for that reason. As graphics are not among the strengths of e-Sword, you may wish to consider some of the many online resources for high quality Bible map images.
God Bless!

I did not realize that there was a copyright issue. That answers that. Thanks.

The two major reasons Rick kept the MAP format semi-closed were:

  1. e-Sword Stability.  That  is  the subject of a different discourse;
  2. Copyright:
  • One needs to obtain permission to distribute a  MAP resource from the copyright holder of the work as a whole;
  • One needs to obtain permission to distribute each image in the MAP resource, from each copyright holder.  This is in addition to distribute the resource as a whole;
  • If an image contains a work of art, then a release for that work of art is needed. THis release may have to  be specific to the MAP resource;
  • If an image contain one or more people, then a signed model release of each individual in the image is required. The model release usually has to be specific to the MAP resource;
  • If the image portrays one or more people under the age of eighteen, then, depending upon the legal juridiction in which that person legally resides, or upon the legal jurisidiction in which the image was made, or the legal jurisidiction from which the image is being distributed, a second model release is needed, and has to be recorded with an agent, or agency, as defined within the statutes of  that legal jurisdiction;

In short, copyright  law, as it applies to images, is more complex than that for text.  Copyright law, as it applies to audio files, is even more complicated. Copyright law, as it applies to video, is still more complicated.

Thus far,  e-sword-users hasn't laid out a policy on copyright, and  how it relates to the acceptence/non-acceptence of user created MAP resources. For the time being, you can assume that MAP resources will have to provide/include all of the permission notices listed above.  Likewise, for files that contain audio, image, or video as part of them, they will require, at a  minimum, the same permission notices.
