Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Tue, 06/23/2009 - 15:56
All:
Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0 for Windows Mobile 6 was released earlier today.
Windows Mobile 5, and Pocket PC 2003 are still at version 3.0.1.
These are all executable files, that require installation from a WinBox. :(

Me too, work well but even the smallest fonts size is too large. (VGA panel 640x480)

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
All:
I upgraded the ROM in my Samsung Saga, then installed Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0. Fortunately, my resources were not deleted during either upgrade. :)
The Samsung Sage has a 320 x 320 pixel screen resolution. I can almost read two verses at a time. That is a function of the small screen size ( 2.6 inches by 2.6 inches.)
The issue for me is that the fonts are slightly out of focus. :(
This is a side effect of using fonts that aren't crafted for the specific device. I'm not sure how to configure it to use the built in fonts. :(

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Just FYI--
I am having the same problem on my HTC Touch Pro and like another poster, Pocket e-sword is the main thing I use on it. Maybe more than the phone!
Thanks

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I think the Font Option is not working. It is unable to change the font size below Medium (even if you select smallest, the size is the same as Medium). You can select bigger font size and it will adjust but not below.
The blurry font is due to the font type. I've changed it something else and it was way better.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I also have touch pro and have large blurry fonts. Anyone find a workaround/fix for this?
I tried putting font size tags in an xml for importing using BPeST since font colour and other font tags work, but didnt seem to make any difference...

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Blurry font seems to be particularly in landscape - forced cleartype on? (cleartype only works properly in portrait).

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I'm just hoping that the programmer will make note of this problem of text size on htc touch devices, and I pray he will be able to correct it. Obviously it was OK in the previous version, and as oft happens in computer programs, when you fix one thing, something else breaks. Believe me, I'm not criticizing--such problems permeate my life. I try to remember: In all things give thanks, for this is God's will for us in Christ Jesus.
Blessings

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I have also the HTC Touch HD. The Font-Size is very big and I get a maximum of 2 verses :(
Smaller than medium isn't possible. Bigger workes.
Is there any solution ?
Thanks.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
As I've read somewhere, changing to the right font may help a bit, tho' not resolving the issue. Thus far, the best font I've come across is Arial Narrow. You can read up to 4 verses (dep on the length of the verse) or roughly 6-8 lines I think.
Some font is too small and skinny making it difficult to read. You need one that's compact, small, but yet not skinny.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Good idea to try other fonts; I've installed the 'Microsoft Himalaya' font, and it's giving me approx. 11 lines of bible text! I love it!

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
If you look at it carefully, you will notice that only the display area's text are enlarged.
Infact, you can see that it is a zoom effect, not a font problem. Somehow the display area is zooming in the text, that is why the fonts are large and pixelated.
I suspect that it probably has something to do with the module in the software responsible for displaying all text (the problem exists for about, information, commentary, and so on, but not the menu items).
I have tried sending the feedback through the webpage, but have not gotten any reply from them. Hopefully, they can get this solved.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I just got a reply from them regarding the large text and I am helping to provide them screen shots so that they can troubleshoot and hopefully finally resolve the issue. Fingers crossed, I will post the updates here.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
All:
I installed RealVGA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327830 and browse through the thread for the "current" version.)
I then installed the 96dpi and 128dpi CABs.
Then installed the "Microsoft Himalaya Font".
Set the Bible top Psalm 119. KJVR.
Set text size to largest: Verses 1 is displayed. Most of verse two is displayed.
Set text size to larger: Verses 1 - 2 are displayed.
Set text size to medium: Verses 1 - 2 are displayed. Some of verse three is displayed.
Set text size to smaller: Verses 1 - 3 are displayed.
Set text size to smallest: Verses 1 - 3 are displayed. Most of verse four is displayed. ("Diligently" is the only word from that verse that is not displayed.
This is on a Samsung Saga (SCH i770) with the Verizon update installed.
###
The issue is pixalation. Neither study notes not topical notes have that blurry, out of focus look that pixalation creates.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Hi all, need help here, I've installed 3.1.0 on my Omnia 2 and there's a problem of sometimes it's able to run and other times it just auto shut off, I've cleaned up every trace of config, bibles, etc and re-installed and now it's still cannot be run. Any advise?

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
now it's still cannot be run. Any advise?
a) Did you install Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0 or 3.0.1?
They are listed on the Pocket e-Sword download page as:
* Pocket e-Sword for Windows Mobile 6 (WVGA only) (v3.1.0) 4,452kb
* Pocket e-Sword for Windows Mobile 5 & 6 (v3.0.1) 4,453kb
* Pocket e-Sword for Pocket PC 2003 (v3.0.1) 4,448kb
The Omnia 2 only works with the first one.
b) The second question is where did you install it?
Pocket e-Sword doesn't like running from storage cards, or secondary memory locations. (You can put resources there, but not the executable file.)
c) What other programs are installed?
d) What other programs are running?

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Hi jonathon, my answers to your questions:
a) 3.1.0
b) Initially when it works fine, i installed it in "My storage" but now i even tried the main memory but still failed.
c) Well I've got facebook, google maps, resco contact manager, youtube, sportypal, wvgafix, cleanram, ing change font
d) What other programs are running? no other program, other than resco contact manager on the background.
I do suspect it happens after I Installed something, but no idea what is it.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I ended up rolling back to the 3.0.1 version for windows mobile 5&6 (on my HTC touch pro)
now I get approx 18 lines of clear text on the smallest text option on tahoma font
The only problem is that the program control icons especially the red and blue cancel/ok buttons are really small, and the book/chapter/verse combo boxes are too narrow, but on the whole, it is less of an inconvenience to have small buttons rather than massive text

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Wow, I'm amazed. I'm running Samsung i900 (Omnia) with Mobile 6.1 and I have the opposite problem. Even on the largest setting the text is so small. I've tried different fonts and no change. At my age this is a problem, I don't quite handle small print as well as I used to ;-) any ideas anyone?

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I have found a temporary workaround. I posted it on the Pocket e-Sword forum but thought people here might be interested. Basically you have to resize the glyphs in the fonts you want to use.
1. Download a trial version of High-Logic Font Creator. You need a version 5
trial as the new version 6 is save-disabled. Get it here:
http://download.cnet.com/FontCreator-Home-Edition/3000-6675_4-10759651.html
2. Copy e-Sword fonts from PPC to a temp directory on PC.
3. Open a font in Font Creator. Select all and then go into menu item Tools and
select Glyph Transformer. Then select the item Outlines-Scale. Change the two
values to a lower percentage. I chose 75% for both. Click OK
4. Then go to menu item Format-Settings-Metrics. Change the values of WinAscent
and Win-Descent. This controls the space between lines. I selected 1400 and -500 respectively but you could try other values. Click OK and then save font.
5. Transfer over to PPC. First I had to rename the 2 fonts on the PPC to
Ezra.orig and Galatia.orig because it protested files were in use.
6. Fire up Pocket e-Sword and voila :-)
Two caveats:
1. Do not edit any system fonts because it will mess up the size in other progs.
Not a prob for me because I use Ezra as English and Hebrew font.
2. The fonts are not brilliant. The Greek especially was a bit washed out. The Galatia bold font is better
Optional Step
Buy Font Creator but it is really expensive!

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Hi Ryisamu,
Did solve your problem yet? I am using OmniaII as well with eSword3.1.0. Although I have not encountered your problem, I would like to know if you figured out the reason.
OmniaII with eSword3.1.0 cannot change the text size and the Strong's dictionary does not work properly. It just cannot look up Strong number directly. I am new to Pocket eSword. Please inform me if there is any tricks to make it works properly. Thanks.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Nope. Gave up. It's a minor problem really. Strongs works fine but with the text it requires I need my reading glasses when I'm reading my e-sword which I never used to. At 46, it was good to have a book (well, e-book) that I could make large enough to read without glasses, lol. Ah well, all flesh is passing ;-)

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
I used FontCreator but did it slightly differently which gives results that i think were a little better. You dont have the same control over the font size though so it may be too small for some people. But the font looks clearer on screen. I have uploaded them here if you would like them. Instructions to install them in the readme.txt
http://www.baycfc.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14...
Click on the 'Bibles' folder.
Thanks to FontCreator who provide a trial version of their software that made the rescaling of these fonts possible.
The process to shrink your own fonts is:
1. Open font
2. Menu > Format > Settings
3. Change the 'Units per em' to 4096 (or greater if you want really small fonts)
4. Menu > Format > Naming
5. Add a '2' after the original name

Hi isjacob,
Apparently no, so I'm still stuck here :( not sure if newer firmware will make any difference though but I haven't tried flashing.

Re: Pocket e-Sword 3.1.0
Samsung gt-s5230
This is a Java phone. AFAIK, it does run Windows Mobile 6.1.
Unless you can find an emulation program for Windows Mobile, you won't be able to use Pocket e-Sword in your phone.

Thank you, e-Sword became usable again :)

Works well on the HTC Touch HD (WVGA) but the font size is huge even if "smallest" is selected. I can see about two verses at a time max!
